Gatehouse enters into agreement to buy the Boston Herald

BOSTON – The Boston Herald was acquired by Gatehouse Media LLC, the owner of the Providence Journal, the Boston Herald reported Friday afternoon.

The purchase is subject to court approval.

The Boston Herald also filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today in the District of Delaware.

Patrick J. Purcell, the owner and publisher of the Herald has owned it since 1994, when he bought it from News Corp. Purcell was publisher of the paper for News Corp. starting in 1984.

The deal is for the Herald’s operational assets, and no price was given for the deal. The paper added that it is required by courts hold an auction to allow all potential buyers an opportunity to submit competing offers due to its bankruptcy filing. It currently has 240 employees.
