The new enterprise qualifies for about $2.2 million in state incentives through the R.I. Commerce Corp.
The site will employ about 60 full time workers.
“The official opening of Gotham Greens’ Providence location is an important step in our efforts to grow Rhode Island’s food economy,” said Gov. Gina M. Raimondo. “It’s critical that Rhode Islanders have access to fresh, locally grown food all year round, especially during the cold winter months.”
The greenhouse is expected to produce 6 million heads of lettuce annually, along with other products such as salad dressings, herbs and pesto dips, the company said.
Gotham Greens products are available at local retailers such as Whole Foods, Dave’s Marketplace, Shaw’s and Star Market. The company has also committed to donating more than 5,000 pounds of fresh produce to the R.I. Community Food Bank this winter.
“Since announcing our expansion into New England, we continue to feel inspired by the city, state and region’s legacy of manufacturing and local food culture,” said Viraj Puri, co-founder & CEO of Gotham Greens, which is based in Brooklyn, N.Y. “We have received tremendous support from elected officials, retailers, restaurants and our community, who love that we can provide a reliable, year-round supply of fresh and safe produce.”
