WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded $941,513 in grants to Rhode Island health centers, department Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced Wednesday. Across the nation, 1,159 community health centers will benefit from $150 million in grant awards. The awards will help centers enroll uninsured citizens in new coverage options.
“Too many of our citizens cannot access or afford quality medical care, so providing options for these individuals is a priority for me, for my colleagues in the Rhode Island delegation and for the administration,” U.S. Rep. James R. Langevin said in prepared remarks.

Last year Rhode Island’s eight health centers served 134,905 visitors, with 32 percent of them uninsured.
“These critical resources will help ensure more Rhode Island families can enjoy access to quality, affordable health care services,” said U.S. Rep. David N. Cicilline. “Along with Congressman Langevin, I will continue standing up and advocating to bring important federal resources back to our state to get things done for Rhode Islanders.”
The nearly $1 million in awards will support health centers as they help Rhode Islanders understand their options in the state’s new health insurance market place, the R.I. Health Benefits Exchange. Centers will also help determine Rhode Islanders’ eligibility for other programs, such as Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program.
Centers benefiting from the grant expect to hire 21 additional employees and help 19,650 citizens enroll in affordable health coverage.
