HSRI Director Sherman exiting role to head Pa. exchange

PROVIDENCE – HealthSource RI Director Zachary W. Sherman will depart his position at the state health insurance exchange effective Sept. 20, HSRI announced Thursday.

Sherman was named head of the health care exchange in March 2016. He has worked at HSRI since January 2015.

“I am proud to have been a part of the state’s efforts to achieve universal coverage and to protect access to affordable coverage,” Sherman said in a statement. “As a result of [Gov. Gina M.] Raimondo’s leadership, we have lowered the uninsured rate by nearly two-thirds, resulting in more than 96% of Rhode Islanders with coverage.”

Following his departure, he will be taking a role as executive director of the newly established Pennsylvania Health Insurance Exchange Authority in Harrisburg, Pa., HSRI said.

A search process has begun for Sherman’s successor. HSRI Chief of Staff Lindsay Lang will serve as interim director following Sherman’s departure.

“A record number of Rhode Islanders have access to affordable health care as a direct result of Zach’s service to our state,” said Raimondo in a statement Thursday. “Under his leadership, we’ve made significant progress reducing our uninsured rate and have improved HealthSource’s engagement with its customers. I’m grateful for his years of dedication to the people of Rhode Island, and I wish him the best of luck in his next venture.”
