Jeyo connects Outlook e-mail with text messaging

Providence-based Jeyo Inc. launched two software utilities that will allow cell phone users to organize countless text messages using Microsoft Outlook or a program like it.

One package, the Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook, enables users of Windows Smartphone and PocketPC Phone Edition devices to send, receive and organize SMS (Short Message Service) messages through Outlook just as easily as they manage e-mail today, extending the power of Microsoft’s flagship e-mail program to the realm of SMS text messaging.

For those without Outlook, or those who prefer to manage their SMSs from a stand-alone application, the Jeyo Mobile Companion provides an independent Outlook-style SMS manager.

Jeyo makes “Companionware” to extend and combine the power and functionality of mobile devices and PCs.

SMS messaging and SMS-based services are increasing rapidly around the world, their growth boosted by their convenience and universality.

According to Jeyo, SMS is now used by U.S. real estate brokers to handle instant updates from the field, by doctors’ offices in Australia to remind patients of appointments and schools in England to communicate with parents. Yet unlike e-mail or instant messages, SMS messages have been relatively hard to track and manage – creating an opportunity for Jeyo.

ýThe exchange of information via SMS is now ubiquitous; the U.K. alone will generate 25 billion SMS messages this year Ð and U.S. traffic is exploding,” said Jeyo President Josh Carroll in a news release. “We saw a gaping hole that needed to be filled: the lack of a robust tool to manage SMS messages in the same way that e-mail is managed today. The Mobile Companion and the Extender for Outlook fill that niche.”

The Mobile Extender allows users to send, receive, search and manage SMS messages from a Windows PC, including bulk messaging; forward SMS messages to e-mail users; forward e-mail to cell phones; view and compose SMS messages in offline mode; fully integrate with an Outlook address book; back up messages in an Outlook folder; and write and receive SMS messages in any Windows-supported language.

Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook and Jeyo Mobile Companion work with Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 or 2002 or Windows Pocket PC Phone Edition 2003 or 2002. System requirements are PC operating systems Windows XP 2000 or 98ME/98.

Mobile Extender is Jeyo’s fourth product release since the company’s launch in 2002 of its first signature “Companionware.” The Jeyo Mobile Extender for Outlook and the Jeyo Mobile Companion are available for $14.95 via www.jeyo.com, www.handango.com, www.pocketgear.com and www.smartphone.net. Both products are available for a 15-day free trial. Users also receive lifetime e-mail support and one year of free upgrades.
