Mental Health Provider/Advocate: JULIO SABATER
Sabater Laboratory for Psychological Innovations Inc. founder, owner and CEO
What led you to choose health care as your profession? Enjoying helping others has always been a blessing. When I didn’t become an architect at a younger age, I went through a difficult process that turned my life around and led me to many serving roles in health care. Ultimately, I became a licensed clinical psychologist to offer mental health services and provide workforce development training to help meet the unmet needs for providers who represent and serve uniquely diverse children, adolescents, families and adults.

How have you helped boost the quality of or access to health care? My wife, Ivelisse Sabater, our team and I are building a diverse workforce in the mental health space in Rhode Island, as well as trying to meet people where they are to get them the mental health support that they need by expanding our services at SabaterLAB to the community in partnership with The SabaterLAB Foundation through our community care mini-clinics. Because of our work, there is also local access to youth mental health first aid training for individuals working with youths in communities of [Black, Indigenous and people of color] and unserved populations.
What more do you feel the state can do to help further support the health care sector in Rhode Island? Launching multicontextual community-led initiatives for all populations that intentionally include initiatives in communities that are led by populations of brown, BIPOC and by adopting the use of a socioecological public health approach to strengthen its universal capacity for mental wellness and transformational resilience to prevent and heal distresses and trauma.
