PROVIDENCE – R.I. Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin is urging consumers to screen emails carefully and not respond to requests for personal and account information following a security breach at a data-management company that had information from companies such as Capital One, Ameriprise Financial, JP Morgan Chase, Citibank and U.S. Bank, among others.
“While at this point there is no indication that financial information was compromised, this is the time when consumers need to be most vigilant and not inadvertently give savvy criminals access to the bank and credit card information,” Kilmartin said in a statement.
Epsilon Data Management notified its corporate clients of a breach late last month. The company said as many as 40 million customers might have had some personal information compromised.
Kilmartin said Epsilon has more than 2,500 corporate clients, including Best Buy, Brookstone, Disney Destinations, Home Shopping Network, Kroger, LL Bean Visa Card, Marriott Rewards, McKinsey & Co., New York & Co., Robert Half Technologies, The College Board, TiVo and Walgreens.
It is believed additional companies’ information has been breached, but a complete list has not been released by Epsilon, Kilmartin said.
