NEWPORT – What do an all-beef patty, Gruyere cheese, truffle aioli, creminis, tempura cornichons and a brioche bun have in common? They are the star ingredients of the La Forge Casino Restaurant’s “Crowley Burger” and the winner of the second annual Newport Burger Bender competition.
Thirty restaurants in the Newport and Bristol County, Rhode Island area put out their best burger for the contest that ran from Feb. 16 to Feb. 25 and was hosted by Discover Newport.

During the contest period, voters could go online and select their favorite burger. The burger with the highest number of votes won.
The Crowley Burger beat out last year’s champion, the “BBQ Bomb Burger” from Jo’s American Bistro. Discover Newport capped the competition at 30 restaurants, allowing five more restaurants to compete compared to last year’s contest.
“It’s clear there’s even more enthusiasm — and friendly competition — among the chefs and restaurateurs this go-around,” said Brittany Lauro, Discover Newport social media manager and the contest’s organizer, in a statement.
Other burgers in the competition included the “Aquidneck Farms Meatloaf Burger” from Brix Restaurant at Newport Vineyards that featured a meatloaf burger covered in gravy on a potato roll, a burger on a grilled ciabatta roll with Prosciutto De Parma called “The Antipasti Patty” from The Wharf Pub and White Horse Tavern’s “The Smoky Duck — a burger that includes duck confit.
