“We’re living in a world of uncertainty” might be the understatement of the century. We hear this all the time. During these tough times it’s paramount that we find ways to move ourselves, our people and our organizations forward.
But how is this possible amid so much uncertainty?
I’m reminded of a leadership skill taught to me early in my career: “Lead from the balcony, not the dance floor.”
Sometimes in life we get so wrapped up in what’s going on around us that we lose sight of what’s right in front of us. Close your eyes for a moment. Seriously.
Imagine you’re in the middle of a dance floor with music playing and a crowd of people all around you. What do you see? On the dance floor, it’s impossible to notice everything around us because our view is obstructed, and the music makes it hard to hear.
But what if we viewed our surroundings from the balcony? We could see out beyond the people dancing. We might notice the lights, the DJ, the food table, the bar. When we’re able to zoom out, the details become much clearer.
It’s important in life to step out of the weeds and view the world more holistically, now more than ever. Block out the noise, assess the real risks, make sound decisions and execute flawlessly. Remember, leadership is a privilege, not a right, and you don’t need a fancy title to demonstrate it – just some perspective.
