Mass. grants UMassD., SouthCoast Development Partnership $300K for blue economy corridor

DARTMOUTH – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and the SouthCoast Development Partnership received a $300,000, three-year state investment from the Mass. Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development to develop a “blue economy corridor,” UMass announced Monday.

The blue economy incorporates offshore wind, the fishing industry, the aquaculture industry, watercraft design and ship-builders, and marine scientists, among other maritime-related industries.

The “blue economy corridor” initiative is intended to examine the blue economy supply chain, workforce, higher education research, and identify challenges to growth and exports, among other factors. The initiative will also look at unemployment and wages in the blue economy sector, and look for ways to diversify the regional economy, UMass said.

“Southeastern Massachusetts is at a turning point, and the growth of the marine industry cluster will help lead the region into its next chapter – one of increased economic prosperity,” said SCDP Executive Director Hugh Dunn.
