Memorial to Cape Verdean veterans dedicated in May

EXETER – The Cape Verdean Veterans Memorial, located in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, honoring veterans of Cape Verdean decent who fought on behalf of the United States dating back to the Civil War, was dedicated in May.

According to the Cape Verdean Memorial Veterans Project, many immigrants from the African island nation enlisted in the armed services prior to becoming U.S. citizens.

Jack Afonso, president of Riverside Stone Co., out of Seekonk, designed the memorial, which will be located adjacent to the Jewish War Veterans Memorial and is approximately $56,500 and expected to be completed in December.

The Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery was founded in May 1974 and is home to 34 monuments that represent individuals belonging to multiple veterans, ethnic and wartime groups.
