MIDDLETOWN – Mikel Inc., an undersea warfare technology company, has received an $8.2 million contract from the U.S. Navy to assist with engineering and technical services for its Global Command and Control Systems, the company announced Wednesday.

The contract will allow Mikel to support the improvement and implementation of the Navy’s Global Command and Control Systems – Maritime to all submarines in the naval fleet. It is also possible that Mikel could assist in the handling of systems for all submarines, surface ships and land-based sites the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in Newport said.

GCCS-M is a system that merges “command, control, communications and intelligence” to provide entities in the naval fleet with information on potential friendly and threatening forces in the sea, air and on land.

The team from Mikel will provide system, process and in-service engineering support, laboratory technical services, onboard software installation and other services to the naval fleet, Kelly Mendel, Mikel president, said. “[Mikel] is grateful to be chosen by the Navy to supply advanced technological support for systems that are at the heart of its global capabilities,” she added.

The company’s specializations include acoustic tracking and navigation, cybersecurity, submarine and surface ship sonar and combat systems.
