Miriam expert to speak about women’s cardiovascular health

Dr. Barbara H. Roberts, director of the Women’s Cardiac Center at The Miriam Hospital and author of “How to Keep From Breaking Your Heart – What Every Woman Needs to Know About Cardiovascular Disease,” will give a free presentation on Sept. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Christiansen Conference Center at Landmark Medical Center, 115 Cass Ave., Woonsocket.
Roberts, who also maintains a private cardiology practice and is associate clinical professor of medicine at Brown University, is president of the Women’s Heart Foundation and past president of the American Heart Association in Rhode Island.
Although she treats both men and women, she is an expert in how cardiovascular disease affects women in particular.
“For many centuries, medicine has been controlled by men – most physicians were men – and it was felt that you could study men and generalize those results to women,” she said in a news release. “But we know now that’s not the case.”
Mended Hearts, a national nonprofit organization affiliated with the American Heart Association, supports people with heart disease, their families and caregivers. It has partnerships with 460 hospitals and rehabilitation clinics and offers services to heart patients through visiting programs, support group meetings and educational forums.
