EAST GREENWICH – The New England Institute of Technology announced the opening of its first-ever residence hall Thursday.

The residence is a 123,000-square-foot, $35 million, four-story building with 400 beds. The student living areas in the building are divided into 13 “pods,” with each pod housing about 30 students. Each pod has its own lounge and study rooms. The building’s social spaces include game areas, a lounge with a fireplace, student collaboration rooms, a kitchen area and a patio opening onto a courtyard green.

The university also announced the opening of a 42,000-square-foot student center Thursday. The student center includes a food court, a lounge area, patio seating, a stage for student performances and a fitness center.

In prepared remarks NEIT President Richard I. Gouse said, “This is a historic moment at New England Institute of Technology. … This expansion project offers us the opportunity to attract individuals to our university from across the country and internationally as we continue to fulfill our mission of providing students with the technical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to compete in today’s global economy.”
