NEWPORT – The refurbished Newport Gateway Center has reopened. The intermodal transit hub features a new design that will improve its resiliency in future storms.

Pare Corp., a multidisciplinary engineering and planning firm with offices in Lincoln and Foxboro, Mass., was responsible for the design of steel support columns for new metal-roofed canopies, the Americans With Disabilities Act-compliant crosswalks, a new traffic flow pattern, permeable pavers and a new stormwater system that uses bio-retention areas and rain gardens.

The architects for the $6 million improvement project were Northeast Collaborative Architects and WDA Design Group, both based in Providence. The owner is the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority.
