NEWPORT – The Newport Restoration Foundation will not renew the contract of President and Director Franklin D. Vagnone and has restructured its leadership, the nonprofit’s board of trustees announced. Effective Friday, the executive leadership team of Alyssa Lozupone, Gina Tangorra and AmyElizabeth Winsor will be assuming full responsibility for the operations of NRF as the foundation plans to expand its board, according to a news release. “With plans for an expanded board, bringing radically broadened expertise, it has been determined that leadership will take the form of a partnership between board members acting as chairs of the streamlined committees,” the trustees said in a statement. Newport Restoration Foundation spokesperson Sebastian Meyer told Providence Business News that the board of trustees determined that this new form of leadership was the best way to continue to advance the mission of the organization after hiring a consultant to review the nonprofit's operations. He added it iswas a mutual decision on the part of the board and Vagnone to not renew his contract. “Frankie has been instrumental in increasing the multiple activities that NRF brings to Newport’s residential and cultural life and the board is grateful for his energy and vision in introducing needed change to the institution," the statement read. “The board wishes him well as he seeks a new opportunity to apply his gifts and experience.” Vagnone was named president on the foundation in 2022. “As we continue to fulfill the mandate and vision expressed in Doris Duke’s will, an expanded board and dedicated, centralized staff will do much to enhance the services we render to Newport and to our visitors from the world beyond,” said NRF board chairman Amy Berkowitz. “We look forward to the expansion of these services to meet the ever-increasing demands of climate change, preservation and viability in a rapidly changing environment.” (SUBS 4TH paragraph with comment from foundation spokesman.)
