MIDDLETOWN – SGE / Northeast Engineers & Consultants Inc. today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire two-year-old Rhode Island Wind and Solar Power. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Northeast Engineers – a corporate member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), creator of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green-building rating system – described the purchase as a “strategic acquisition.”
Both companies are based in Middletown: Rhode Island Wind is located at 1015 Aquidneck Ave., while SGE / NE&C has its offices about a mile away, at 55 John Clark Road in the Aquidneck Corporate Park.
The engineering firm, founded in 1987, has more than 20 years’ experience in conducting site evaluations and wind studies for coastal and waterfront structures. Its parent company – multinational construction management and infrastructure design consultancy Secure Global Engineering LLC (SGE), also based at Aquidneck Corporate Park – has completed more than $120 million in power generation, transmission and distribution projects in the Middle East for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Rhode Island Wind was founded in 2007 by President Scott Milnes, a civil engineer, and Vice President Tim Hetland, a hydronic engineer who oversees product development, installation and on-site services. It has focused on small to mid-sized local energy installations.
Its addition “extends Northeast Engineers’ capabilities,” enabling the firm to provide its clients with “full service, turn-key renewable energy solutions,” company officials said in a statement.
Milnes will become vice president of renewable energy, heading the combined companies’ new six-person Sustainable Global Energy unit, while Hetland will be come the new unit’s director of construction, a Northeast Engineers spokesman told Providence Business News.

The new unit will provide alternative-energy project services from feasibility studies, permitting and engineering to procurement, installation and commissioning. Its first project will be the 100 kilowatt (kW) wind turbine proposed for the Aquidneck Corporate Park, to help power the Easton Pond Business Center. Sustainable Global Energy also has been picked to install a wind turbine for the R.I. Department of Environmental Management (DEM) at Salty Brine State Beach in the Galilee section of Narragansett.

There could be no better investment in America than to invest in America becoming energy independent! We need to utilize everything in out power to reduce our dependence on foreign oil including using our own natural resources. Create cheap clean energy, new badly needed green jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil.The high cost of fuel this past year seriously damaged our economy and society. The cost of fuel effects every facet of consumer goods from production to shipping costs. It costs the equivalent of 60 cents per gallon to charge and drive an electric car. If all gasoline cars, trucks, and SUV’s instead had plug-in electric drive trains the amount of electricity needed to replace gasoline is about equal to the estimated wind energy potential of the state of North Dakota.We have so much available to us such as wind and solar. Let’s spend some of those bail out billions and get busy harnessing this energy. Create cheap clean energy, badly needed new jobs and reduce our dependence on foreign oil. What a win-win situation that would be for our nation at large! Isn’t this the same Northeast Engineers that had all those phony taxpayer funded projects in Iraq a few years back? They were on 60 minutes? Half their employees quit..
I wouldn’t hire Northeast to build a sandcastle. Most of projects have been sketchy at best and fronts and I believe they were war profiters like Haliburton. I hope the buidings next to those turbines have good insurance!
This is the same firm Middletown hired to stop the sewage from dumping into Easton’s Beach & Kings Park. That worked out well. I thought they were under investigation becuase of Iraq. Over there were Secured Global Engineering and now they are Sustainable Global Energy? RI dons’t even have solar rebates? Whos paying for all this? The taxpayers?
