NEWPORT – The Newport Restoration Foundation and the City of Newport announced the winners of 2017 Doris Duke Preservation Awards Monday, honoring projects that ensure the preservation of architecture in Newport and Aquidneck Island.

Dr. Holly Bannister and Mr. Douglas Newhouse were recognized for their efforts in restoring the Mailands & Westcliff Carriage House in Newport. Built in 1875, the structure had fallen into disrepair in recent years and was rehabilitated under the new ownership of Bannister and Newhouse.
The Newport Historical Society Resource Center
The Newport Historical Society received an award for its handling of its resource center in Newport. The complex spans three separate buildings built in 1730, 1902 and 1915, and the society was recognized for modernizing its buildings while still respecting their historical character.
Sachuest Point Landscape Restoration
The Scenic Aquidneck Coalition was recognized for bettering coastal conditions around Sachuest Point in Middletown. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the coalition removed some two miles of utility poles and restored the integrity and historical aesthetic of the coast and dunes of the area.
Pieter N. Roos, will also receive an award in recognition of his 18 years of service as executive director of the NRF and his contributions to its mission of historic preservation.
A celebration of the recipients will take place on Friday, September 8 at Rough Point in Newport, the home of preservationist Doris Duke, the awards’ namesake.
