OER honors public sector for energy-efficiency achievements

PROVIDENCE – The R.I. Office of Energy Resources recognized 12 state agencies, municipalities and higher education facilities for renewable-energy and energy-efficiency achievements, at its second annual Lead By Example Energy Awards ceremony at the Statehouse on April 27.

The awards honor state agencies working to transition energy supply and consumption practices to lower-cost, cleaner, low-carbon solutions.

Winners include: Providence Water; R.I. Office of Veterans Affairs; towns of Coventry and Westerly; University of Rhode Island; cities of Central Falls and Providence; R.I. Department of Administration; R.I. Office of Attorney General; Narragansett Bay Commission; Quonset Development Corp.; and Rhode Island College.

Among the measures taken, Providence Water installed a rooftop solar array and energy-efficient LED lighting at its central operations facility; the Rhode Island Veterans Home used efficient heating and cooling systems and lighting; and Coventry upgraded eight municipal buildings and seven of its schools.
