United Way of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Afterschool Plus Alliance partnered to treat more than 80 children from Pawtucket, Central Falls and Woonsocket to a Pawtucket Red Sox game.
The children are all participants of the local summer-learning programs, which include Pawtucket COZ and Connecting for Children and Families. The children joined volunteers from United Way, Afterschool Plus Alliance and PawSox staffers at McCoy Stadium for the barbecue-and-baseball-game event, which was scheduled to coincide with National Summer Learning Day.
This celebration marked the conclusion of United Way and the Afterschool Plus Alliance’s month-long volunteer effort to collect learning supplies for area programs dedicated to keeping children engaged in learning during the summer months.
“The volunteers and businesses involved in the learning supplies collection all deserve a standing ovation. They stepped up to the plate and delivered a home run,” said Anthony Maione, president and CEO of United Way of Rhode Island. •
