Pharmacy tech program to be offered again

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Skills Center will again offer a 12-week free course in pharmacy technology this fall, in partnership with CVS Caremark Corp., Mayor David N. Cicilline announced last week.
An orientation session is scheduled for Sept. 15 at 8:30 a.m. at NetworkRI, One Reservoir Ave. Advance registration is required; to register, call Sue Almeida at 861-0800.
Interested applicants must pass proficiency tests equivalent to ninth-grade math and reading and undergo a background check.
Classes begin Oct. 14 at the Skills Center, in the Providence Place mall, and run for 12 weeks, 12 hours per week, in the classroom and in mock-pharmacy settings. Students will also be required to complete an additional 24-hour unpaid internship with CVS/pharmacy at the end of the program.
All classes are free, and students will get help with resume writing, interviewing and job search skills, and reimbursement for uniforms. This program is offered four times a year. Hundreds of local young adults have participated so far.
The Providence Skills Center was launched in 2005 by Workforce Solutions of Providence/ Cranston, with the support of the Providence mayor’s office, the Providence School Department, the National Retail Federation, the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce and others. It has partnered with the National Retail Federation and serves as its regional hub for certification in retail and customer training, and with CVS in its customer-service and pharmacy technology training programs.
