PROVIDENCE – Juan M. Pichardo verbally resigned from his position on the Providence Board of Licenses at the end of Thursday’s board meeting.
Pichardo had been under pressure to resign from Mayor Jorge O. Elorza this week following a recent incident involving gunfire near a new nightclub on the East Side.

Pichardo, a former Democratic state senator, became chairman of the licensing board in 2015, with the backing of Elorza. His term wouldn’t have expired until Jan. 31, 2019.
He was not required to give up his position on the board. However, Tuesday, the board cast a 4-1 vote of no confidence in Pichardo, who was the only dissenting vote.
A representative for the city said Pichardo has not submitted a resignation in writing as of Thursday evening.
