PNPP New Director, 10,000th Tree Video, and January 15th 2014 deadline
This fall, The Providence Neighborhood Planting Program (PNPP) celebrated its 25th year, and planted its 10,000th tree on Sackett Street with the help of many program partners and friends. PNPP highlighted these achievements in a 3 minute video available online at www.pnpp.org and at the First Annual Volunteer Thank You Event cohosted with Partnership for Providence Parks, Groundwork Providence and the Parks Department at the Roger Williams Park Botanical Center.
PNPP is a partnership between the Mary Elizabeth Sharpe Street Tree Endowment, the City of Providence and the residents of Providence. Since 1988, The Mary Elizabeth Sharpe Street Tree Endowment has matched Providence Parks Department funds to provide trees, soil, sidewalk preparation, and tree delivery at no cost to Providence residents who apply for and receive a Neighborhood Street Tree Planting Award.
This winter, Liz Downing will pass the PNPP Director position on to Tod Damon. Downing feels that “this fall, PNPP reached new levels of teamwork with both established and new partners, volunteer turnout and volunteer appreciation. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of PNPP. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to direct PNPP and work with such inspiring people to plant trees together.” After six years and 2700 trees, Downing will be focusing on her self-named small garden maintenance and installation business and will advocate for trees in other capacities.
Tod Damon has coordinated five Neighborhood Street Tree Applications in the past six years in the West Side, and helped out with several other applications coordinated by other West Side neighbors. Damon is “excited to be a part of this program and continue its legacy of marrying public and private resources for the benefit of all. We will increase our city’s tree cover with friends, neighbors and partnerships while at the same time, growing ourselves. For present and future generations, we can play a part now. Let’s get planting!”
To receive street trees through the Neighborhood Street Tree Planting Award, neighborhoods should have at least five properties that each need at least one tree (minimum request is 5 trees). A complete list of qualifications and applications are available at www.pnpp.org or contact us directly at 401-368-5380 or street_trees@pnpp.org. Applications are due by January 15 for spring 2014 street tree plantings.
PNPP considers Elmwood, Federal Hill, Lower and Upper South Providence, Olneyville, Reservoir, Smith Hill, Valley, Washington Park and West End neighborhoods high priority planting areas and encourages applications from these neighborhoods especially. However, all Providence neighborhoods are eligible for this award.
