PPS receives grant for Downcity marker program

PROVIDENCE – The Providence Preservation Society Revolving Fund, manager of the $2 million Neighborhood Fund and the $7.2 million Downcity Fund, has been awarded a Preserve Rhode Island/Citizens Bank Foundation Mini-Grant of $1,000.

The money will help finance the Downcity Historic Marker Program, a PPS effort to identify and label historically significant commercial buildings in Providence.

Preserve Rhode Island described the program as “a tool for educating citizens and visitors about the rich, architectural and commercial heritage of Providence. [It] may also encourage building owners to rehabilitate and maintain their historic structures, by making them aware of the important contributions their building has made to Providence’s cultural development.”

Over the past eight years, the Preserve Rhode Island/Citizens Bank Foundation Mini-Grant has given $58,000 for 61 preservation projects statewide. Other recipients this year include:

• The North Smithfield Conservation Commission, for a consultant fee to conduct an archaeological survey of the Indian burial mounds and ceremonial mounds in the Nipsachuck swamp area.

• The Massasoit Historical Association in Warren, for installation of an emergency tarpaulin to protect the deteriorating wood-shingled roof of the Maxwell House and prevent further damage.

• The Apponaug Area Improvement Association in Warwick, for a consultant fee to conduct a preservation survey of a circa 1920 building that is part of the abandoned Apponaug Mill complex.

• The Tavern Hall Preservation Society in Kingston Village, for a consultant fee to evaluate the Reynolds House, also known as Tavern Hall, and develop a restoration plan. The house, built in 1738, hosts public educational programs and activities.

• The Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown, for a consultant fee to complete a National Register Nomination for Paradise Farm, enabling the farm to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
