NEW BEDFORD – Proactive Philanthropy, a nonprofit organization that converts books, lab and manufacturing equipment, and other assets into cash and reinvests those funds into fellow nonprofits, has grown.
The organization now boasts an inventory of more than 500,000 books at its 1 King St. location and more arrive every day, thanks to its partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay.

To better serve fellow nonprofits, Proactive Philanthropy’s bookselling efforts have been increased and the group now employs six to help achieve higher sales.
In a statement, Proactive Philanthropy founder and CEO Edward McPherson said the more than 200 used books the group sells on eBay and Amazon every day is an “exciting” feat.
By the group’s count, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay donates roughly 12,000 pounds of books to the Proactive Philanthropy warehouse each week, which are then scanned by the sellers to determine which ones will be sold. Profits are split between Proactive Philanthropy and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Massachusetts Bay.
