Providence metro area unemployment rate tops R.I. in July

PROVIDENCE – The unemployment rate in the Providence-Warwick-Fall River metropolitan area in July was 12.6%, not seasonally adjusted, an increase from 3.9% one year prior, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Wednesday.

Rhode Island’s unemployment rate was 11.4% at that time, while nationally the unemployment rate was 10.5%.

The civilian labor force in the metro area totaled 698,980, an increase of 2,060 year over year. The number of unemployed in the metro area totaled 87,786 in July, an increase from 26,907 from one year prior.

Month to month, the unemployment rate in the Providence metro declined 1.1 percentage points.

Nonfarm employment in the metro area totaled 548,200, an 8.2% decline year over year.

In the New Bedford metro area, the unemployment rate in July was 18.8%, an increase from 4.5% one year prior and a decline from 21.3% in June. there were 16,186 unemployed in the area and the civilian labor force totaled 85,880. The Massachusetts unemployment rate was 16.2% in July.

Nonfarm unemployment in the New Bedford metro area totaled 59,500 in July, an 11.6% decline year over year.

In the Norwich, New London, Conn.-Westerly metro area, the unemployment rate was 12.4% in July. The Connecticut unemployment rate was 10.3% during that time. Unemployed individuals in the metro area totaled 17,712 in July, while the labor force totaled 143,400. Nonfarm employment in the metro area declined 14.2% year over year to 112,600.
