NORTH KINGSTOWN – The road built to connect development at Quonset Business Park to Route 403 has been officially named Romano Vineyard Way, after the family-owned vineyard that once operated on the eastern 370 acres of the property.
The vineyard, which produced about 100,000 gallons of wine each year, had bordered Newcomb and Post roads before the arrival of the U.S. Navy during the early 1940s, according to the Quonset Development Corporation (QDC).
The Romano family had harvested grapes on the land since 1908, producing Rhode Island Red Sparkling Burgundy, Devil’s Foot American Port and other wines, each of which sold for 50 cents a gallon.
The Quonset Development Corporation, a special-purpose subsidiary of the R.I. Economic Development Corporation, is a quasi-public company responsible for the development and management of the 3,000-plus acre Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown.
