PROVIDENCE – The price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island increased 3 cents this week to $2.57 per gallon, 1 cent below the national average of $2.58 per gallon, according to AAA Northeast Monday.
Regular gas ranged 21 cents this week, from a low of $2.45 to a high of $2.66 per gallon.

Prices in the Ocean State were 32 cents higher than one year prior, when regular gas cost $2.25 per gallon.
“Compared to the first few weeks of January last year, consumer gasoline demand is noticeably higher, which is surprising given the frigid winter much of the country has experienced this month,” said Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs, in a statement. “But demand isn’t the only factor driving prices up. Crude oil has been selling at expensive rates the past few months. Those higher-market prices are now trickling over to consumers at the pump.”
This week, Rhode Island midgrade gasoline averaged $2.85 per gallon, ranging from $2.65 to $3.06 per gallon.
Premium gasoline averaged $3.04 per gallon, ranging from $2.85 to $3.29 per gallon.
Diesel fuel in Rhode Island averaged $3.02 per gallon this week, ranging from $2.85 to $3.16 per gallon.
In Massachusetts, the price of regular, unleaded gas declined 1 cent this week to $2.50 per gallon, 8 cents below the national average.
Prices for regular gas ranged 38 cents from $2.41 to $2.79 per gallon. Last year at this time, the price of regular gas was 30 cents lower at $2.20 per gallon.
Massachusetts midgrade gasoline averaged $2.75 this week, ranging from $2.55 to $3.05 per gallon.
Premium gas in Massachusetts averaged $2.95 this week, ranging from $2.68 to $3.25 per gallon.
Diesel fuel averaged $2.96 per gallon, ranging from $2.66 to $3.09 per gallon.
