PROVIDENCE – The average price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline increased 3 cents this week to $2.51 per gallon, 2 cents above the national average of $2.49 per gallon, according to AAA Northeast Tuesday.
Last year at this time, the price of regular gas was 20 cents lower at $2.31 per gallon.

Prices in the Ocean State ranged 34 cents from $2.37 to $2.71 per gallon.
Midgrade gasoline averaged $2.80 this week, ranging from $2.58 to $2.99 per gallon.
Premium gasoline averaged $2.99 this week, ranging from $2.68 to $3.18 per gallon.
Diesel fuel averaged $2.93 this week, ranging from $2.85 to $3 per gallon.
“Although prices at the pump nationally went up over the holidays, motorists can expect to see prices trend cheaper this month, as we are likely to see a significant drop in gasoline demand with the holidays now in the rear view mirror,” said Lloyd Albert, AAA Northeast senior vice president of public and government affairs, in a statement.
In Massachusetts, regular gasoline prices remained at $2.43 per gallon, ranging 52 cents, from $2.27 to $2.79 per gallon. Prices in the Bay State were 6 cents below the national average.
One year prior, the price of regular gasoline in Massachusetts was 16 cents lower at $2.27 per gallon.
Midgrade gas in Massachusetts averaged $2.70 this week, ranging from $2.47 to $2.99.
Premium gas in Massachusetts averaged $2.88 per gallon, ranging from $2.67 to $3.25 per gallon.
Diesel fuel in Massachusetts averaged $2.86 per gallon, ranging from $2.69 to $3.04 per gallon.
