PROVIDENCE – The average weekly price of self-serve, regular unleaded gasoline in Rhode Island jumped 8 cents to $4.47 per gallon, AAA Northeast said Monday. That price is 5 cents lower than the national average but $1.52 more than it was in Rhode Island a year ago. Northeast gasoline prices keep marching upward as unsuccessful peace talks between the U.S. and Iran keep oil markets volatile and global supplies tight, AAA said. Last week, petroleum prices moved lower and retail gasoline prices stabilized slightly after reports that negotiations to end the 10-week-old conflict would resume through the weekend. Crude oil prices settled about $6 lower by the end of trading on May 8 as markets weighed the chances of a peace deal and the potential resumption of oil and gas shipments through the blockaded Strait of Hormuz. However, the price for a barrel of Brent crude oil climbed 1.7% to $102.99 Monday after President Donald Trump called Iran’s latest proposal to end their war “totally unacceptable.” The rejection raises the stakes for Trump’s upcoming trip this week to China, where he could urge President Xi Jinping to pressure Iran into making concessions. Xi has leverage because China is the biggest buyer of Iran’s sanctioned crude oil. The war has already sent the price for a barrel of Brent up from roughly $70 and delivered a blast of painful inflation through the global economy. That’s because it has shut the Strait of Hormuz, keeping oil tankers stuck in the Persian Gulf instead of delivering crude to customers worldwide. “Pump prices remain under pressure from tightening domestic supplies and higher oil costs caused by the ongoing war with Iran,” said Jillian Young, director of public relations for AAA Northeast. “Even with higher prices, demand figures show that Americans’ appetite for travel remains undeterred – for now.” Midgrade gas in Rhode Island averages $5.11 per gallon, premium gas averages $5.52 per gallon and diesel fuel averages $5.61 per gallon. In Massachusetts, the average weekly price of self-serve, regular unleaded is up 7 cents at $4.46 per gallon. That price is 6 cents less than the national average but $1.49 higher than it was a year ago. Midgrade gas in the Bay State averages $4.99 per gallon, premium gas averages $5.39 per gallon and diesel fuel averages $5.81 per gallon. (Material from The Associated Press was used in this report.)
