CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in February was 4.7%, up from 4.6% in January, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Thursday. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1% in February, up from 4% the previous month, according to the DLT. The Rhode Island jobless rate was 4% in February 2024, while the U.S. rate was 3.9%. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in February was 28,000, up 900 from January and 4,200 from a year ago. The number of employed residents was 562,600 in February, down 1,400 from the previous month and 2,100 year over year, the DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force totaled 590,600 in February, down 500 from January but up 2,000 from February 2024. Nonfarm jobs in February reached an all-time high of 515,100, an increase of 700 from the revised January jobs figure of 514,400 and up 5,600 from February 2024, the DLT said. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. In the past three months, the local economy has added 700 jobs, averaging just over 200 jobs per month. Accommodation and food services reported the largest job gain in February, adding 500 jobs, followed by a gain of 400 jobs in construction. The largest monthly job declines were noted in the educational services sector and government sector, falling by 300 and 200 jobs, respectively. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in February:

Accommodation and food services: 53,400, an increase of 500 since January and an increase of 1,900 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 27,900, an increase of 200 since January but the same year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 8,400, decrease of 100 since January and also year over year.

Construction: 22,700, down 400 from January and 1,000 year over year.

Educational services: 26,200, a decrease of 300 since January and 2,100 year over year.

Finance and insurance: 28,400, down 100 since January and 200 year over year.

Government: 66,400, a decrease of 200 from January but up 600 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 86,700, an increase of 100 since January and 2,200 year over year.

Information: 5,500, same as January but down 300 year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,200, same as January but down 400 year over year.

Manufacturing: 40,100, the same as January but up 100 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $26.13 per hour in February, 30 cents more than in January and up 8 cents from February 2024.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 31,000, down 100 from January but up 500 year over year.
