CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in March was 4.8%, up from 4.7% in February, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Thursday. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.2% in March, up from 4.1% the previous month, according to the DLT. The Rhode Island jobless rate was 4.1% in March 2024, while the U.S. rate was 3.9%. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in March was 28,500, up 500 from February and 4,100 from a year ago. The number of employed residents was 560,400 in March, down 2,200 from the previous month and 5,000 year over year, the DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force totaled 590,600 in February, down 500 from January but up 2,000 from February 2024. Overall, the state’s labor force totaled 588,900 in March, down 1,700 from February and 900 from March 2024. Nonfarm jobs in March reached an all-time high of 515,600, an increase of 400 from the revised February jobs figure of 514,200 and up 3,700 from March 2024, the DLT said. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. In the past three months, the local economy has added 1,100 jobs, averaging just below 400 jobs per month. The construction and health care and social assistance sectors each added 400 jobs in March. The construction employment level in March totaled 23,100, the highest level since January 2007. Government employment fell by 400 in March, stemming from a loss of 300 jobs in state government and a loss of 100 jobs in federal government. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in March:

Accommodation and food services: 53,200, a decrease of 200 since February but an increase of 1,100 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 28,400, an increase of 300 since February and 500 year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 8,500, same as February but down 200 year over year.

Construction: 23,100, up 400 from February and 1,100 year over year.

Educational services: 26,500, up 300 since February but down 1,800 year over year.

Finance and insurance: 28,300, down 100 since February and 200 year over year.

Government: 66,000, a decrease of 400 from February and 200 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 87,000, an increase of 400 since February and 2,100 year over year.

Information: 5,400, down 100 since February and 300 year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,300, up 100 since February but down 200 year over year.

Manufacturing: 40,100, down 200 from February and 100 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $25.85 per hour in March, 11 cents more than in February but down 35 cents from March 2024.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 31,000, up 100 from February and 300 year over year.

Retail trade: 46,800: down 300 from February and 500 year over year.

Wholesale trade: 17,000, up 100 from February and 700 year over year.
