CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in September was 4.5%, down slightly from 4.6% in August, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Tuesday. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.4% in September, up from 4.3% the previous month, according to the DLT. The Rhode Island jobless rate was 4.5% in September 2024, while the U.S. rate was 4.1%. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in September – those actively looking for work – was 26,300, down 800 from August and 300 from a year ago. The number of employed residents was 563,600 in September, up 1,900 from the previous month but down 1,100 year over year, the DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force – the number of people employed or looking for work – totaled 589,800 in September, up 1,000 from August but down 1,500 from September 2024. The state’s nonfarm jobs in September totaled 514,700, an increase of 400 from the revised August jobs figure of 514,300 and up 2,700 from September 2024, the DLT said. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. Over the past three months, the Rhode Island economy has added 1,500 jobs, or an average gain of 500 jobs per month, the DLT said. September job gains were led by the accommodation and food services, arts, entertainment and recreation, government, and health care and social-assistance sectors, each adding 400 jobs. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in September:

Accommodation and food services: 51,600, an increase of 400 since August but down 100 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 29,800, a decrease of 200 since August but an increase of 1,400 year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 7,900, up 400 since August but down 500 year over year.

Construction: 22,800, down 100 from August but up 200 year over year.

Educational services: 27,700, up 200 from August and 700 year over year.

Finance and insurance: 28,000, down 100 since August and 700 year over year.

Government: 66,700, up 400 from August and 300 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 85,200, up 400 since August and down 500 year over year.

Information: 5,200, down 100 since August and down 400 year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,100, the same as both August and a year ago.

Manufacturing: 40,200, up 100 from August and 700 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $26.11 per hour in September, 34 cents less than in August but up 47 cents from September 2024.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 32,200, down 200 from August but up 1,000 year over year.

Real estate and leasing: 6,600, down 200 from August but up 200 year over year.

Retail trade: 46,500, same as August but down 1,000 year over year.

Transportation, warehousing and utilities: 14,600, down 200 from August but up 900 year over year.
