CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment in November was 4.6%, the same as October, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Thursday. The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.2% in November, up from 4.1% in October, according to the DLT. The U.S. rate was 3.7% in November 2023. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in November was 27,100, down 100 from October but up 7,300 from a year ago. The number of employed residents was 561,600 in November, down 1,700 from the previous month but 5,100 more than in November 2023, the DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force totaled 588,700 in November, down 1,800 from October but up 12,400 from November 2023. The state’s nonfarm jobs in November numbered 515,500, an increase of 1,500 from the revised October jobs figure of 514,000 and up 8,500 from November 2023, the DLT said. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. In the past three months, the Rhode Island economy has added 5,900 jobs, an average of nearly 2,000 jobs per month, the DLT said, The largest monthly job gains in November were noted in the administrative and waste services and health care and social assistance sectors, with each sector adding 500 jobs. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in November:

Accommodation and food services: 50,800, an increase of 200 since October but a decrease of 1,100 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 30,800, an increase of 500 since October and up 2,300 year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 8,200, an increase of 200 since October but down 500 year over year.

Construction: 21,200, down 200 from October but up 100 year over year.

Educational services: 26,600, an increase of 300 since October and up 400 year over year.

Finance and insurance: 28,700, an increase of 100 since October and up 100 year over year.

Government: 66,600, an increase of 100 from October and up 1,400 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 87,300, an increase of 500 since October and an increase of 3,800 year over year.

Information: 5,600, a decrease of 100 from October and same year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,600, same as October and down 200 year over year.

Manufacturing: 40,800, same as October but down 200 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $25.69 per hour in November, 20 cents less than October and down 40 cents from September 2023.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 30,900, down 200 from October but up 1,000 year over year.
