CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment in October was 4.6%, the same as September, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Thursday. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in October was 27,200, unchanged from September and up 7,700 from a year ago. The number of employed residents was 563,300 in October, down 800 from the previous month but 6,700 more than in October 2023, the DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force totaled 590,300 in October, down 800 from September but up 14,400 from October 2023. The state’s nonfarm jobs in October numbered 513,400, an increase of 400 from the revised September jobs figure of 513,000 and up 9,000 from October 2023, the DLT said. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. Meanwhile, the U.S. unemployment rate was 4.1% in October, same as September, according to the DLT. The U.S. rate was 3.8% in October 2023. In the past three months, the Rhode Island economy has added 4,900 jobs, an average of 1,600 jobs per month, the DLT said. The largest monthly job gains in September were noted in the accommodation and food services, and wholesale trade sectors. The largest job loss in September was noted in the government, with the bulk of losses stemming from state government. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in September:

Accommodation and food services: 50,500, an increase of 1,100 since September but a decrease of 1,200 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 30,200, same as September and up 1,900 year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 8,000, an increase of 100 since September but down 400 year over year.

Construction: 21,500, same as September but up 600 year over year.

Educational services: 26,300, a decrease of 200 since September but the same year over year.

Finance and insurance: 28,600, a decrease of 100 since September but no change year over year.

Government: 66,500, a decrease of 500 from September but up 1,500 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 86,900, a decrease of 100 since September but an increase of 4,700 year over year.

Information: 5,700, an increase of 100 from both September and year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,500, a decrease of 100 since September and down 300 year over year.

Manufacturing: 40,800, a decrease of 100 since September but up 500 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $25.58 per hour in October, 6 cents less than September and down 37 cents from September 2023.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 31,000, same as September but up 800 year over year.
