CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s seasonally adjusted unemployment in May was 4.3%, two-tenths of a percentage point higher than the previous month, the R.I. Department of Labor and Training said Thursday. The DLT says the number of unemployed Rhode Islanders in May was 25,100, up 800 from April and 10,200 from a year ago. Also, the number of employed residents was at 563,500 as of May, up 1,600 from the previous month and 5,600 more than May 2023, DLT said. Overall, the state’s labor force was 588,600 in May, up 2,400 from April and 15,800 from May 2023. The state’s total nonfarm jobs in May totaled 512,600, a decrease of 1,100 jobs from the revised April jobs figure of 513,700 and up 8,300 from May 2023, DLT says. These jobs exclude farming and some government, private and nonprofit workers. In May, the number of jobs fell in eight industry sectors, rose in six sectors, and remained unchanged in four sectors Government employment was down 900 jobs in May, a result of the 1,000 decrease in state government. The large drop stems from a reported decrease in the number of student workers at public colleges and universities, DLT says. Also, the accommodation and food services, administrative and waste services, and management of companies each reported a decrease of 300 jobs. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm payrolls in Rhode Island by sector in May:

Accommodation and food services: 51,400, a decrease of 300 since April but an increase of 500 year over year.

Administrative and waste services: 30,200, a decrease of 300 since April but an of increase of 1,500 year over year.

Arts, entertainment and recreation: 8,600, a decrease of 100 since April but a gain of 700 year over year.

Construction: 21,200, same as April but down 100 year over year.

Educational services: 27,400, an increase of 500 from April but same as a year ago.

Finance and insurance: 28,500, down 200 from April and 200 a year over year.

Government: 64,900, a decrease of 900 from April and up 500 year over year.

Health care and social assistance: 85,900, same as April but up 4,800 year over year.

Information: 5,600, an increase of 100 from April but down 500 year over year.

Management of companies and enterprises: 10,500, down 300 from April and 400 year over year.

Manufacturing: 41,100, an increase of 100 since April and up 700 year over year. Production workers in the sector earned $26.01 per hour in March, 21 cents than April and up $1.55 from May 2023.

Professional, scientific and technical services: 31,000, same as April and a gain of 1,000 year over year.

Real estate, rental and leasing: 6,400, an increase of 100 from April but down 200 year over year.

Transportation, warehousing and utilities, 14,100, up 200 from April and 400 year over year.
