PROVIDENCE – Brown University Health paid millions of dollars to its former chief executive in the two years following his resignation, WPRI-TV CBS 12 reported Wednesday. Dr. Timothy Babineau – who stepped down in May 2022 as CEO and president of Lifespan Corp., which was rebranded as Brown University Health in October 2024 – received $2 million in severance in 2023 and another $1.3 million in severance in 2024, WPRI-TV reported after obtaining newly filed tax documents and additional information. In 2023, Brown Health compensated Babineau more than its actual CEO for that year, John Fernandez, who received $2.1 million, according to the report. Brown University Health spokesperson Sharon Torgerson told WPRI-TV that the $1.3 million severance payout in 2024 was Brown Health’s final payment to Babineau. “Dr. Babineau’s 2019 contract included a multi-year payout to ensure leadership continuity during a challenging period in health care, along with retirement benefits,” she said in a statement to WPRI-TV. “Brown Health compensation is benchmarked against industry standards and is reviewed and approved by our Board of Directors to ensure they are competitive.” During his decade leading the health system, Babineau earned a total of $30.7 million, WPRI-TV reported. He resigned in 2022 after state officials nixed a proposed merger with Care New England Health System, an effort that Babineau advocated for and supported. The merger proposal was rejected by R.I. Attorney General Peter F. Neronha and the Federal Trade Commission on Feb. 17, 2022. Both argued that the combined entity would violate federal antitrust laws and create an uncompetitive market in the state, which would negatively impact the quality, cost and access to health care. Neronha faulted the hospital companies for providing late or inadequate information about their plans and failing to explain in detail how they would pay for it. However, Lifespan and Care New England defended their application for a merger, with Babineau stating that they “articulated the incredible and transformative value” of the merger for the state, adding that he was “deeply disappointed” in the decision to reject the proposal. Babineau became the CEO and president of Lifespan in August 2012, following his time as president of Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital and The Miriam Hospital. Before coming to Lifespan as president of those three hospitals in 2008, Babineau was the senior vice president and chief medical officer for the University of Maryland Medical Center and School of Medicine in Baltimore for three years. Prior to that, Babineau held numerous administrative positions – including vice chairman of the division of surgery, surgical residency program director and director of the center for minimally invasive surgery – at Boston Medical Center. At one point before that, Babineau was a trustee for the University of Massachusetts, where he earned his medical degree.
