PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island’s capital is one of the best mid-sized cities to visit in the Northeast, according to RewardExpert, a free service that helps travelers maximize points and miles.

Providence ranks second on the list of the best midsized cities to visit in the Northeast, behind Syracuse, N.Y., and ahead of New Haven, Conn. Rounding out the top five are Allentown, Pa., and Stamford, Conn.

Providence was lauded for its “amazing diversity of recreational activities” and its high walkability score of 78, making it the most walkable city among those ranked. The website also noted its proximity to Boston as another appealing factor for those who visit.

Among the other regions in the U.S., Ann Arbor, Mich., topped the Midwest, and Boulder, Colo., topped the Mountain West. Eugene, Ore., led the Pacific West, while Knoxville, Tenn., was No. 1 in the South Central region. Charleston, S.C., led the South Atlantic region.

RewardExpert compared U.S. cities that have between 100,000 and 300,000 residents across four key dimensions: Affordability, safety, recreational activities and city profile. An aggregate score was given to each city to determine its final ranking by region.
