
PROVIDENCE – The population of Rhode Island increased 0.4% from 2010 to 2018 to 1,057,315 residents, or an increase of 4,358 people, according to new population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau this week.
The percentage growth in the Ocean State population over eight years ranked No. 4 in New England, behind Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Rhode Island ranked ahead of Vermont and Connecticut.

In Rhode Island, the only growing county over 10 years was Providence County, with a 1.5% population growth to 636,084 residents.
Every other county in Rhode Island showed a population drop over the eight years. The fastest population decline rate took place in Bristol County, which fell 2.4% to 48,649 people. In Kent County, the population declined 1.4%, or 2,252 residents, to 163,861 people, the largest nominal decline in the state.
The Washington County population declined 0.7% in that time to 126,179. The Newport County population declined 0.7% to 82,542 residents.
In Bristol County, Mass., the population increased 2.9% from 2010 to 2018 to 564,022 residents.
The fastest-growing county in the United States between 2010 and 2018 was Williams County, N.D., growing 57.8%.
New England population growth:
- Massachusetts: Increased 5.4% to 6.9 million residents
- New Hampshire: Increased 3% to 1.4 million residents
- Maine: Increased 0.8% to 1.3 million residents
- Rhode Island: Increased 0.4% to 1.1 million residents
- Vermont: Increased 0.1% to 626,299 residents
- Connecticut: Declined 0.04% to 3.6 million residents
The state with the fastest-growing population from 2010 to 2018 was Utah, which grew 14.4% to 3.2 million people. The population of Washington, D.C., increased 16.7% in that time to 702,455 people. West Virginia had the highest rate of population atrophy in that time, decreasing 2.6% to 1.8 million people. Puerto Rico’s population declined 14.2% from 2010 to 2018 to 3.2 million people.
Overall across the U.S., the population grew 6% to 327 million people.
