PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation is accepting applications from early-career researchers for grants of up to $25,000 to launch “promising” medical research projects, the foundation announced Thursday.
The goal of the one-time grants is to allow researchers to get projects to a stage to compete for national funding. The funds may be used as startup support for laboratory, clinical or population-based research. The Rhode Island Foundation also said the funds may be used for general medical research, as well as infectious diseases, cardiac research, coronary artery disease, cerebral accidents, cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, allergies and performance-enhancing substances.

Applications are open to researchers at academic institutions or hospitals in Rhode Island who have been assistant or associate professors for no more than five years.
“Thanks to the generosity of our remarkable donors, we have the means to advance medical breakthroughs,” said Neil D. Steinberg, the foundation’s CEO and president, in a statement. “These investments aim to help Rhode Islanders lead healthier lives and prime one of the economy’s most promising sectors.”
The deadline to apply for the grants is Oct. 28. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of scientists, physicians and the Rhode Island Foundation. In the most recent round of funding to researchers, the foundation granted more than $400,000 in seed funding.
