WEST GREENWICH – Four Rhode Island teachers won the 2011 Amgen Award for Science Teaching Excellence, which is given to educators who excel in teaching science.
The winners were: Anthony Borgueta, Barrington Middle School; Shannon Donovan, Scituate High School; Mary Frances Hanover, Providence Country Day School, East Providence; and Joanne Kearns, Reservoir Avenue School, Providence.
Each teacher receives an unrestricted $5,000 grant. In addition, their schools receive a restricted $5,000 grant that can be used to expand or improve the school’s science program, science resources, or the professional development of the school’s science teachers.
Amgen has honored science teachers with the excellence award since 1992. Winners are selected based on science lesson plans that used novel teaching methods, creativity and demonstrated effective teaching methods. •
