R.I. third in country on most prescription-addicted states list

PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island ranked third on a list of the most prescription-addicted states in America, according to a study by Findthebest.com and healthgrove.
The Ocean State was behind only Kentucky and West Virginia in the ranking of states that give out the most prescriptions per capita to Medicare Part D beneficiaries, of which there are approximately 37 million.
Healthgrove compiled data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to come up with the findings.
In 2012, 450,026 prescriptions were given per 100,000 people, which cost the state of Rhode Island approximately $281.4 million.
Kentucky, which ranked second, doled out 465,915 prescriptions, while first place West Virginia gave out 478,244.
After Rhode Island among the New England states, Maine had 300,949 prescriptions; Massachusetts had 299,917; Connecticut, 278,442; Vermont, 246,540 and New Hampshire, 215,719.
