PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Foundation announced the launch of a new program from its Initiative for Nonprofit Excellence – the Best Practice Awards.
The Best Practice Awards, which are sponsored by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, aim to recognize Rhode Island nonprofit organizations with “outstanding practices” in board governance, leadership development and creative collaboration.

“We know nonprofits in Rhode Island are quietly doing good work. Now more than ever, it’s time to shine a spotlight on those that are excelling,” said Jill Pfitzenmayer, vice president of the foundation’s Initiative for Nonprofit Excellence.
According to the INE, best practices include things like a high level of engagement by board members in the mission and direction of the organization; a strong system for developing leaders within the organization; and collaborative leadership efforts to leverage expertise or financial resources.
The awards include an unrestricted $1,000 grant and an INE program tuition waiver for up to two board or staff members. Grant recipients will showcase their work at a special convention and receive special recognition of the Rhode Island Foundation’s annual meeting.
Last month, the RIF announced a $100,000 initiative to overhaul three Providence schools that were identified as “persistently lowest achieving.” The three schools – Carl G. Lauro Elementary School, Gilbert Stuart Middle School and Dr. Jorge Alvarez High School – are now called “Innovation Schools.”
