PROVIDENCE – RI.gov, the official state Web site, has won top honors in the Interactive Media Awards, an international competition for excellence in Web site design and development.
The site was named an Outstanding Achievement winner in the government category for meeting the highest standards of design, usability, innovation, content and accessibility, according to a news release.

RI.gov has been developed and managed by a Kansas-based e-government company, NIC Inc., since 2001. NIC’s current contract for the site runs through 2010, with the option of extending it through 2012. Six full-time staff members work on RI.gov on behalf of NIC’s Providence-based local subsidiary, Rhode Island Interactive LLC.
“We’re pleased to have RI.gov recognized as a best-in-class Web site and I congratulate the team behind this work,” Gov. Donald L. Carcieri said in a statement. “Citizens are turning to the Web more and more for government information and business, and it’s important to provide an easy-to-use, helpful resource.”
RI.gov provides more than 1,200 links to state and local government Web pages and information and over 70 online government services, sorted and searchable by user-friendly tags. The site also is also integrated with Twitter, YouTube and Flickr and includes XML feeds.
The real answer to the state’s website needs comes not from a Kansas-based companies but from Rhode Island based companies. The state wants to be a creative center, an art center, but they have no website architecture to back that. However, now BetterStream.com is offering to build the RhodeIslandArts portal and it will be the profit center for the exchange of art and media.
