PROVIDENCE – Earl J. Croft III, executive director of the R.I. Turnpike and Bridge Authority, will retire at the end of January 2020, RITBA announced Wednesday.
Croft has served in his role for more than 13 years. The RITBA board of directors will now conduct a search and interview process for his replacement. Prior to his role at RITBA, Croft worked in multiple capacities for the R.I. Family Court.

Croft’s time at the helm of RITBA included the introduction of electronic tolling to the state, the installation of a barrier on the Newport Pell Bridge, and numerous reconstruction and maintenance projects on all four bridges under RITBA’s jurisdiction.
“Throughout his long career in government – including more than a decade as executive director of the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority – Buddy Croft has shown himself to be a dedicated public servant,” said Gov. Gina M. Raimondo in a statement. “Every Rhode Islander has benefited from Buddy’s steadfast commitment to improving our state’s infrastructure and willingness to go the extra mile. I wish him the best of luck in his well-deserved retirement.”
