Small Business Development Center gets $325K grant

PROVIDENCE – The Rhode Island Small Business Development Center at Johnson & Wales University has received a $325,000 grant that will help it expand its offerings.
“[We are] pleased with the additional capacity these federal funds provide, allowing us to extend further critical consulting support to struggling small businesses,” said Adriana Dawson, SBDC associate state director, in a news release on Tuesday.
The funding will allow the organization to:

  • Expand its international trade program to include import-export readiness assessments, new market assessments, market research, trade leads, export marketing plan, financing and export insurance.
  • Partner with the Chafee Center for International Business at Bryant University, the R.I. Economic Development Corporation, and Johnson & Wales University graduate students.
  • Expand the Vets Helping Vets program;
  • Conduct a workshop on the advantages of government contracting Small Business Innovation Research program. Train clients in innovation and contract proposal development.
  • Focus on linking to the tourism industry cluster to expand small businesses supporting tourism;
  • Acquire 125 new clients.
    The funding was provided under the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 which outlined $50 million in grants to the U.S. SBA’s Small Business Development Centers nationwide.
    The centers provide business counseling and advice to entrepreneurs and small-business owners.

    1. The more a small business can do to show customers they are ready, willing and able to assist, the more successful that business will be in today’s challenging business environment.
