FALL RIVER — Munro Electrical Distributing Co., a 66-year-old electrical products supplier based in Fall River, has jumped on the renewable energy bandwagon.
The company has added a new division, Munro Solar, that will sell solar-power products to commercial and residential customers.

To demonstrate solar energy’s utility, in October Munro installed a solar system on the roof of its headquarters and distribution center, a 100-year-old building on North Seven Street in Fall River’s mill district.
The company says the system, which was installed by Swansea-based installation firm Southcoast Greenlight, has cut its electric bill by one-third and offsets roughly 600 pounds of carbon emissions each week. The system can be monitored around-the-clock on the Web site SolrenView.com.
“Our goal in taking the lead and installing this system on our roof is simple,” said Brian Munro, the company’s president. “We want to demonstrate that if solar energy can work on a 100-year-old building in an old mill city, it can work anywhere.”
The company said it took advantage of federal and state rebates and tax incentives to reduce the project’s cost. Excess energy also is sold back to the electric company.
Munro added: “Solar energy systems work for any commercial, government, or residential building since they can be designed and built for the needs of each customer, regardless of size.”
