SOMERSET – The Somerset Station power plant, which owner NRG Energy chose not to seek a permit to reopen in February, has been put up for sale, The Herald News reported on Monday.
The 21-acre plant on Riverside Avenue has no listed asking price with Boston firm Grubb & Ellis, but was last assessed at $22.6 million.

NRG Energy has also put up 12 properties in Swansea for sale, including a 105 acre plot off of Hortonville Road and 25 acres next to RK Swansea Place on Grand Army of the Republic highway. In total, the Swansea parcels total 244 acres which were purchased by NRG in 1999 for $1.8 million; NRG paid $16 million for the plant.
NRG chose last month not to seek a permit to reopen for the plant which has been shut down for a year following a state mandate to either switch to a cleaner operation or stop production, the newspaper said.
Somerset residents submitted petitions to create a committee to oversee plans for reusing the power plant; voters will be able to approve the committee and the proposed rezoning on May 16 at the town meeting.
