Stop & Shop to improve ADA compliance in all stores

PROVIDENCE – Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. LLC has agreed to improve accessibility at check-out aisles at its 400 stores and bring them into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, U.S. Attorney for the District of Rhode Island Stephen G. Dambruch announced Oct. 16.

Following a complaint by a Rhode Island resident, an investigation revealed the company failed to keep at least one staffed, accessible check-out aisle open during store hours at multiple Rhode Island locations, and that many Rhode Island store locations did not fully comply with technical ADA requirements.

Under the agreement, Stop & Shop is obligated to improve access to its check-out aisles for individuals with disabilities at all its stores; revise its policies, procedures and training; perform audits of all its stores; and pay $6,500 to the complainant and a $25,000 civil penalty.
