PROVIDENCE – More people moved to Rhode Island than left, according to Atlas Van Lines Inc.’s latest annual migration study based on the company’s interstate moves that it handled in 2017.

The study found that 55.7 percent of Rhode Island’s moves were made into the state, with 182 inbound moves and 145 outbound moves. Last year, the state was considered “balanced” with 237 moves inbound and 236 moves outbound. The state was also classified as inbound in 2014 and 2015.

A state was considered “inbound” in the study if 55 percent or more moves were into the state.

Rhode Island ranked No. 10 in the nation for highest inbound percentage for 2017.

Among New England states, Rhode Island had the second-highest inbound rate behind Maine (59.7 percent).

New Hampshire reported the third-highest inbound rate at 54.7 percent, followed by Vermont at 52.4 percent, Massachusetts at 52.1 percent and Connecticut at 43.5 percent.

The greatest number of interstate moves in New England occurred in Massachusetts, where 1,611 moved inbound while 1,479 moved outbound.

Idaho ranked No. 1 for the greatest percentage of inbound moves at 65.1 percent, followed by Washington (62.5 percent) and Nevada (62.4 percent).

Illinois ranked No. 1 for outbound moves in 2017 at 62.4 percent.

The study was based on 72,986 moves handled by Atlas Van Lines between Jan. 1 and Dec. 15 in 2017.

Atlas Van Lines has conducted its migration trend study since 1993.
